Auto Tools Mart completed this dash cam installation in a Subaru Outback Touring in North Bethesda. The vehicle was fitted with a VIOFO A229 Plus front camera and a rear-window camera, with a VIOFO HK4 hardwire kit included in the installation equipment.

For an Outback owner, the important questions go beyond which camera to buy. Where will the front unit sit around the mirror? How will the rear camera fit on the hatch glass? What equipment is needed if you want recording while parked? Our original photographs show the actual camera positions and equipment from this job, giving you a useful starting point for planning your own installation.

The equipment photograph shows the two cameras, connecting cables, memory card case and HK4 packaging together at the installation. Checking these items before mounting the cameras helps identify missing parts while there is still time to resolve them.

If you already own a dash cam, send us a photograph of everything in the box before your appointment. Include the camera model, rear-camera cable, power accessory and memory card details. A camera and its supplied plug-in charger do not necessarily provide everything needed for the parking setup you have in mind.

Front-camera placement around the Outback’s mirror

The close-up shows the A229 Plus mounted beside the rear-view mirror. Its model name is visible on the front unit, and the cable connections lead towards the upper trim. Keeping those connections near the mounting position helps avoid a long power cable hanging down across the dashboard.

The photograph also shows why placement needs to be assessed inside the actual vehicle. The mirror and the surrounding factory housing occupy space at the top of the windscreen. The driver’s view, access to the camera controls and the camera’s view through the glass all need consideration. A mounting position in one Outback should not automatically be copied to a different model year or trim.

Rear-camera placement on the hatch glass

The rear camera sits high on the rear window, with a short section of connection cable visible above it. This gives the rear unit a discrete position away from the middle of the glass. The photo records the mounting location; it is not a sample of the camera’s recorded image.

When assessing an Outback rear-camera installation, the hatch needs particular attention because it moves each time the boot opens. The cable path and available movement should be checked with the hatch open and closed. Rear-window tint, reflections and the camera angle also deserve a footage review, especially if recording after dark matters to you.

What the HK4 means for parking-mode planning

VIOFO lists the HK4 as compatible with the A229 Plus. Its ignition-sensing connection supports the change between driving and parking operation, while adjustable low-voltage protection can cut power to help protect the vehicle battery. Read the manufacturer’s HK4 guidance for the accessory’s operation and compatibility.

Parking recording depends on the power arrangement and camera settings. VIOFO explains these in its parking-mode guide. Tell us whether you want coverage during short errands, the working day or longer stays so that we can discuss the intended setup.

Hardwiring does not promise unlimited recording. Available recording time depends on battery condition, the power cutoff, camera settings and other factors. A larger memory card creates more storage space; it does not extend the vehicle’s available electrical power.

The fuse-panel photograph is part of this job’s installation record. Fuse colours and positions alone do not establish a suitable power connection. The final selection must be assessed and tested on the particular vehicle; this article does not prescribe fuse slots for other Outbacks.

Five checks worth discussing at handover

Ask for a demonstration of how the system works, as well as a look at the finished mounting positions:

  1. Front and rear footage: open a saved clip from each camera and review the framing.
  2. Power behaviour: confirm what happens when the ignition turns on and off.
  3. Parking settings: where parking mode is part of the agreed setup, review the selected mode and battery-protection setting.
  4. Everyday access: learn how to retrieve a clip and preserve an important recording.
  5. Rear hatch movement: check the installation with the hatch open and closed.

For memory-card planning, the Dash Cam Storage Calculator from DashcamCraft estimates capacity and retention time. Treat its results as planning estimates based on the recording settings you enter.

Questions from Subaru Outback owners

Can you install a VIOFO camera I have already bought?

Yes. Send the exact model and a photo of the accessories so we can review the proposed installation and identify anything else needed before confirming your quotation.

Can the rear camera be installed inside the car?

Yes. On this Outback Touring, the rear unit was mounted inside the rear window, as the installation photograph shows. The view through the glass still needs checking for the individual vehicle.

Does a dark camera screen mean recording has stopped?

A screen alone is not a reliable recording check. Review the camera’s status and a saved file, following the instructions for your exact model.

Will the installation cost the same as this job?

Your quote will reflect your own vehicle, camera system, power arrangement and location. Send those details for an agreed price before booking.
